How to Win at Pai Gow Poker
In Pai Gow Poker, you use two small poker hands to outmaneuver the dealer into submission. To win at Pai Gow Poker, make sure your two card hand is strong, but keep the heavy punch in your big hand.
How To Play Poker With Two Hands
In Pai Gow Poker, you are dealt seven cards. It is up to you to arrange them into a five card hand and a smaller two card hand. Your big five card hand must be better than your two card hand. After you place your bets, you compare hands with the dealer. If your two card hand beats his and your five card hand beats his five card, you win. If both hands go in his favor, you lose. If you each win a hand, the bet is a push. The battle is over yet both sides live to fight again.
Slam the Aces and Collect the Money
You look down into your seven cards, wondering how to arrange them. Then you see what you were hoping for, nestled among the diamonds and clubs - a pair of Aces. What do you do? If the other five cards form a flush or straight, then the choice is easy. Slam the Aces into your two card hand and smile. In almost every case, you will have swept the hands and collected the money. If the other cards are weak, keep the Aces in the big hand. You have an even chance of winning on the two card hand and the Aces will work for you in the big hand.
Bet With Your Head, Not Your Heart
Just as you need a playing strategy to win, you also need a solid betting strategy. Give the old "MIT Blackjack" strategy a try. In the MIT strategy, you keep the bets conservative until you see that by the layout of the cards, your odds of winning have increased. While this strategy was developed for blackjack, you can also use a form for Pai Gow. When the first cards are dealt, you can see whether you have a base that you can work on (like the two Aces above) or whether you will be fishing for a winning hand
