How to Play Poker and Win
Poker is a fantastic card game that takes minutes to learn how to play and a lifetime to perfect. People all over the world play poker for money, for fun, and for the awesome competition that it can generate. Poker is often referred to in movies, books, and today, they even televise the poker world championships like a professional sport. While it may seem complicated to the novice, it's really not that hard to learn. Let's take a look:
The Poker Basics
Poker is played with a single deck of traditional playing cards. There are fifty-two cards divided into four "suits" (Hearts, Clubs, Spades, and Diamonds.) During the game, you receive a certain number of cards. The object is to end the game with a better combination of cards than the other players. In online games, the object is to have one of the standard poker winning combinations. The amount you win depends on which combination you have.
For example, in a certain game you may start with 3 cards. Let's say the cards are the three, four, and six of Clubs. Such a hand does not have a winning combination. But let's say the next card you receive is a five of Clubs. You now have a small straight flush, which is one of the best combinations you can have. The cards are all in the same suit and are in order. Now let's say your final card is the seven of Clubs. You now have a five card straight flush. Very few hands could beat that, in almost all cases you would be a winner.
Winning Real Money with Poker
How much could you win? Well, that depends on how much you wagered. If you started out small because you saw that your original hand did not have a winning combination, you could have raised the bet after getting five. At that point you would know you were a winner and the only question would be how much.
Winning Poker Hands
What combinations are you trying to get? Well, the best are those very rare hands like a straight or a flush. A straight just means that you have a series of cards that are each one more than the one beforehand. In other words a three, a four, a five, etc.
Another good combination is when you have 2 or more of the same card. The rule is always the higher value the better. A pair of tens will beat a pair of threes every single day. Two pairs will always beat one pair.
The key is to spend a few minutes beforehand familiarizing yourself with the best combinations. Then when you play you will have the knowledge necessary to place sensible bets. If you are playing a five card game, and you have no winning combinations amongst the first four cards, don't throw money away. On the other hand, if you have three of a kind already, you are in good shape.
Betting in Poker
After each round of poker, you can either "call" or "raise." "Call" means that you ask for your next card but do not increase the amount you are wagering. "Raise" means you both increase your bet and ask for another card.
In some games, you also have the option of folding. This is when another player asks for a "raise." In multi-player games, everyone playing must either comply with the raise and put more money into the "pot" that the winner will eventually receive, or they can fold. They lose any money that they have already bet, but they don't have to bet more during that round. In every game where you are playing multiple hands, you will get some winning hands and some losing hands. The key is to know which you have and not waste money if you doubt you will get a winning combination.
Bluffing in Poker
There is one exception. That is what is referred to as the bluff. Let's say you don't have any winning combination. You could try and pretend that you do and keep raising. If the other players believe you are raising because you have a great hand, they will all fold. In this way, you could win even if you have nothing worthwhile in your hand. Of course, bluffing and folding are only used when playing multiplayer games. When you are playing solo online, they are not a part of the game.
